Ahhh, January. Fresh calendars, big dreams, and that bold belief that this is the year we finally get it all done. New goals, new plans, new energy… until reality shows up like, “Hey friend, remember me?”

Here’s what I know for sure: real change doesn’t come from wishful thinking — it comes from deciding to be a game changer in how you show up, even when things get uncomfortable.

In football, nobody steps onto the field expecting to score on the first snap and call it a day. You set the goal line, trust the playbook, and move the chains — one smart, intentional play at a time. Same goes for life and leadership.

So, before you load up on resolutions and color-code your planner, let’s talk about a goal-setting approach that actually sticks:

🏈 1. Pick the Goal Line That Really Matters - Not every goal deserves your full energy. Choose the one that truly moves the needle. Because when everything’s a priority, nothing is — and that’s a fast track to frustration.

🏈 2. Progress Is the Real Win - Some days you’ll gain ten yards. Some days you’ll gain one. And some days you’ll swear you’re moving backward in heels. Keep going anyway. Progress beats perfection every single time.

🏈 3. Stack the Small Plays - Big wins aren’t built on grand gestures — they’re built on showing up, doing the work, and repeating it tomorrow. Small, consistent plays add up faster than you think.

🏈 4. Call the Audible Without Apologizing - If a plan isn’t working, adjust it. That’s not quitting — that’s playing smart. The best leaders don’t cling to broken plays; they change them and keep moving.

🏈 5. Celebrate the Yardage - Don’t wait until you cross the goal line to feel good about yourself. Celebrate the discipline, the effort, and the steps forward. Confidence grows when you notice your own progress.

Set the Goal Line. Move the Chains!

A new year isn’t about pressure or perfection. It’s about direction, consistency, and giving yourself a little grace while you figure things out.

So set the goal line, keep moving the chains, and remember:

Champions aren’t built in January… they’re built by what you do next.

It’s Game Time!

Warmly,

Jan Spence, CSP
