Jan's Playbook: Behind the Scenes

From the outside, those bright stage lights look like the big moment. But as any athlete—or speaker—knows, what happens behind the scenes is just as important as what happens under the spotlight.
Think about football. The fans see the touchdowns, the big plays, the highlight reels. But the real work? It’s the practices, the film study, the coaches calling plays, and the teammates cheering each other on when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Speaking is the same way. That moment when I step on stage is just one play in a much bigger game. There’s the research, the preparation, the countless rehearsals, and yes—the incredible behind-the-scenes team making sure the mic works and the lights are just right. Without all of that, the “big moment” wouldn’t have nearly the same impact.

The same goes for your workplace:
Prep with Purpose — Like practice before game day, preparation sets you up for success.
Celebrate the Hidden Heroes — Recognize the folks who may not be center stage but make the win possible.
Trust the Team — Confidence comes when you know the people behind you have your back.
Value the Reps — Each meeting, each effort, each behind-the-scenes moment builds toward the big goal.
The Secret Sauce
This month, I challenge you to notice the “behind the scenes” in your own world. Who’s helping set the stage for your success? A little recognition can go a long way in keeping your whole team motivated and engaged.
Because whether it’s game day on the field, lights up on the stage, or launch time in the office — the spotlight moment is only as strong as the work (and the people) behind it.
Until next time, keep preparing, keep encouraging, and remember… It’s Game Time!
